Creative Workshops for Young People and Adults

I run writing workshops suitable for all ages and abilities on subjects as diverse as poetry, landscape, submitting work, creative careers, book binding, writing for well-being, myth and re-tellings, crime writing (for young writers), speculative fiction and fantasy. I am happy to create bespoke workshops. I have facilitated workshops for organisations including The Writing Squad, Sunderland Culture, New Writing North, and The Portico Library and several secondary schools.

Kym’s sessions are not only confidently delivered, but unique and challenging; the format is deceptively simple and gave us all really interesting new ways to view our work. They have a knack for developing writing tasks which highlight new possibilities.

Katie Byford, Director of Thorn

“You book Kym when you want something slightly different – she always brings something out of left field, a quirky energy and sense of fun, but that is all underpinned by her people skills.”

Steve Dearden, Director of the Writing Squad

1-1 Mentoring (Poetry)

Writers under my mentorship have gone on to win awards such as the Creative Futures Prize and the New Poets Prize, they have been published in magazines including Bathmagg, Poetry London and Butcher’s Dog and have gained access to prestigious development schemes including The Barbican Young Poets and the Writing Squad.

I can offer detailed edits of individual poems, or wider career-focussed advice. My mentoring is tailored to you and your needs and meets you wherever you’re at in your poetry.

Kym is an exceptional mentor and teacher. They are incredibly attentive, giving feedback and support both on written work and holistically in regard to career guidance. Under Kym’s mentorship I have actualised what kind of poet I want to be and what I want out of poetry. Kym understands how to navigate submissions, event facilitation and the creative industry, and will go above and beyond to help out emerging artists. They are a pleasure to work with and are a gift to the creative community!

DYCP Access Support

Did you know that if you’re a disabled or neurodivergent creative seeking to apply for an Arts Council grant via Grantium (including the Developing Your Creative Practice Grant) the Arts Council offers financial support to cover the fees relating to your own needs? You can contact the Arts Council directly to ask them to fund access support for your application. (I am happy to give guidance on this.) I can provide extensive administrative assistance and expertise for anyone who needs guidance and support during their DYCP application.

I have ADHD myself and understand how daunting the process of applying for a Developing your Creative Practice Grant is. I received one myself in 2021 for my Queer Fantasies: Audio Drama development project. I also perform personal assistant work for other creatives with ADHD.

Sensitivity Reads

In the past I have done sensitivity reads for Usborne publishing. I am available for sensitivity reads for lesbian, working class, Non-Binary, Neurodiverse (ADHD), and chronically ill identities / perspectives.I provide extensive feedback both as a report and as comments on the document. My fee depends on length and complexity of manuscript, and my usual turn around time is within fourteen days.

Collaborate with me

You wanna make weird art with me??? Let’s go! Literally just email and be like “I saw your vibe from across the bar—world wide web—do you wanna write something?” And depending on how busy I am, chances are I’ll be like “Sure stranger, ol’ buddy ol’ pal.”

Also, if you think I might be a good fit for some freelance work that isn’t here? Please email me. I am available for comissions, seances, and random gifts from patrons of the arts. I’ll be flattered you thought of me, if nothing else.
